Caretaker/Property Manager
Position Overview
The Caretaker/Property Manager is constantly viewing all areas of Fortland’s 16 acres as well as its infrastructure and physical plant. It is the responsibility of the C/PM to develop and implement systems for ongoing upkeep, maintenance, and functional and aesthetic quality of the landscape, hospitality spaces, utilities, and equipment. This is a partly self-directed position, reporting to both Fortland’s General Manager and the Owner.
In addition to having a healthy mix of ability to work alone in a self-directed way as well as work constructively and good-naturedly as part of a team, the best candidate will have many or all of the following types of experiences, abilities + qualifications:
Operations management
Physical plant oversight + maintenance
Carpentry + building
Landscaping + gardening
Tour guiding
Hospitality
Housekeeping
Waterfront experience
Boat operation + navigation
Boat captain’s license
Small engine repair
WFR/EMT Training
First Aid Certification
In addition, the candidate should be physically capable of performing manual labor tasks including lifting at least 50 lbs with some regularity.
Schedule + Compensation
Schedule:
This is a seasonal independent contractor position beginning in mid to late April and lasting 24-28 weeks.
An average of *35-40 hours/week is expected (understanding that shoulder season weeks may be lighter and mid-season weeks may be heavier), to include a minimum of 2 overnights on island per week, additional overnights are possible.
Compensation:
This is a 1099 contractor position and compensation ranges between $20-25/hour, depending on experience and aptitude.

About Fortland
THE PLACE:
Fortland is a unique island Campground built within the grounds of historic Fort Scammel on House Island in Casco Bay, just a 10-minute boat ride from downtown Portland, ME. It is 16 total acres, which include seven beautifully-furnished camping sites (3 yurts and 4 tent cabins), as well composting toilet outhouses, an outdoor cooking area with grills and burners, a 40’ diameter event tent, 40,000 sq feet of historic civil war era architecture, and epic panoramic views of Portland harbor and the calendar islands. Fortland is open for camping and event rentals (weddings, retreats, reunions) from Memorial Day through mid October.
